#8 (october 06 -now)

..howling ghost proletarians:: the singer Guitars, slides, feedbacks - like a beginning of the best song of a rock band, you know, the part when they just make noise and gradually notes appear and then chords ... only here there is no song coming, just the atmosphere. notes do appear form time to time, but they stay unconnected. it is a moody, cloudy morning as i am writing this and the music of this cdr worked quite nice for building a moody soundscape but i do doubt if i am gonna play it again for the rest of the summer (they say sun is coming indeed tommorow)

..the psychic paramount:: franco italian tour The highly improvised music of psychic paramount brings to mind bands like hovercraft or aalboth. i was especially amazed by this recording (which was originally made on tape) by some of the guitar techniques (which reminded me the guitar masterpieces of one with the universe). lots of guitar noise and a rhythm section that follows a loose but heavy line. raw and intense builds up in power and is really kicking. Music to be experienced loud

..maskinanlegg:: harsh and nervous not really harsh although mostly noisy. nervous, yes, as noises move quite fast. where do they go? well, if they go anywhere at all, it seems like a place where people tend to yawn a lot. but never sit still, on the other hand. one track ("she took a long nervous look") is the most interesting, based on a industrail repeating noise, the others are not bad but not really something to remember

..still:: remains Still is the one man project from hsi-chang lin from dalek. like phillip jeck or strotter inst. he uses only turntables and petal effects as sound sources. starts really noisy and slowly melts down to a nice rich ambient texture. one would expect more cracks and the usual rhtyhm of 33 rpm but still apparently shows a higly skilled manipulation of the turntables and the pedal effects creating unique and at times wonderfull soundscapes. so the usual question with experimental music "right, this is highly unusual as an instrument, but can you actually listen to it, when you don't know how he made it?" can be answered with "oh yes, indeed.." and it'sa great listen i should add

..megatone:: power blade A project from moldavia. experimental and somewhat pacy sounds and ambience with a set of sounds reminding the ones produced by some programs which interpet gene reading into sound. works rather good in low volume transforming the space in somewhat like science fiction b-movie labaratory. true, the colour of the sounds is rather monotonous and too digital like, still, although nothing to really blow your mind, something that at least can keep your interest. a property which tends to become rare in the tons of experimnetal music released nowadays

..ryfylke:: morild / nuema brister dark, deep and chthonic soundscapes, almost trembling under your feet. A few times, sounds spring and then are pulled back again, but mostly this bubbling, murky cold sea of sound keeps its threatening presnce. ah yeah, it does come form norway indeed

..v/a nous sommes les morts A compilation with noise-rhythm-industrial music. a genre that is quite typical in germany i'd say. what is aslo quite typical is the artwork (black, with grey gothic letters) which somehow made me think in a context i didn't like: yes, sad pathetic assholes like wumpscut or the whole neo-folk, ritual, industrial ebm scene which plays with mysticism and nazism and displays such an amazing capacity of reduced brain activity. but, leaving aesthetics aside, what we have here is 14 projects (mostly german i think with the obvious exception of contagious orgasm) which produce industrial like noise and -occasionaly- rhythms. from these: object/urian offer a clever and powerful rhythm track, ick a noisy tesco-like track and i also liked the contributions of ppf and contagious orgasm. the rest also move to an average level and this comp. has a quite compact character in its sound. Maybe not so much my cup of tea, but quite ok

..sten ove toft_utarm_jon eriksen:: split 3 norwegian projects. jon eriksen starts (and closes) this cd with a harsh digital noise, which left me somewhat uninterested. sten ove toft's long track that follows changes things though. a long, fat nice dorne which builds up slowly bursting in 2 minutes of noise towards the end. utarm's contribution sounds more norwegian than the rest: drak and cold atmosphere with haunting sounds coming and going, along the lines of deathprod. and the quite explanatory tiulte "doomed from lust for all that was". nice and powerful stuff

..vinyl terror and horror:: nightmare lullabies Quite precise title. this dannish duo uses mostly turntables as instruments (although i did spot some field recordings) creating loops and strange sounds and nightmarish indeed, melodic themes. at times drony and times just weird, it is something to listen again and again discovering new elements (or new parts to mix with other sounds). very nice and rich in variety, for all those looking for new sounds and ways to create them

..strotter instr.:: anna Vinyl seems the suitable format for a guy playing only with turntables. swiss c.hess creates four tracks with his usual vinyl-rhythmic and industrail noise soundscapes. as a plus both sides of this 7" lock-groove at the smae point creating 2 extremely nice and interesting loops. great!
